Halle Berry explained the difficulties and the challenges she goes though as an African-American actress in her interview with The Guardian. She continued on how winning an Oscar hurt her careerby stating “Everybody talks about the Oscar curse. People win Oscars, and then it seems like they fall off the planet…The moment I won the Oscar, I felt the teardown the very next day.” This theory may hold some truth as other actress’s such as Mo’nique, seem to be experiencing this curse as she too won an Oscar.
According toBaller Alert, Mo’nique publicly admitted last week that she was originally cast for the role as Cookie Lyon in FOX’s new hit TV show “Empire”, but was passed up when network producers heard rumors of her being hard to work with. Co-creator of Empire, Danny Strong, took the time to respond tweeting, “Mo’nique was never offered roles in Empire … setting the record straight”.
But the question is, is this “Oscar curse” real or is the generation more interested in the younger and fresher talent? Regardless, Halle Berry and Mo’nique will always be a pair of the greatest when it comes to the African American acting history.
