Sony Pictures has ordered a spinoff based upon the highly successful movies 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street, collectively grossing more than $530 million worldwide, except it will be starring female leads instead of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Broad City writers Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs have been hired by the studio to write a female-driven script to fit into the Jump Street franchise.
It is speculated that this move is an attempt to create a profitable universe due to Sony’s few successful franchise movies (unlike Disney’s Marvel films or Warner Bros. DC properties). A part of this expansion includes the female-led Ghostbusters reboot that is scheduled to film this summer under Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.
There has been no word yet on casting for the movie or how the planned story will be connected to either the 2012 or 2014 movies, or the 1980’s television show.
Even if the planned female version doesn’t enter into the franchise, there are still plans in place for at least two more installments. 23 Jump Street was confirmed in September 2014 with Jonah Hill and Ice Cube confirmed to return and Tatum still unsigned. It was also revealed, due to the Sony hacking leaks in December, that a potential crossover movie including the Jump Street world with that of the Men in Black.
